The Olive Levy

The Australian Research, Development & Extension Levy and Plant Health (bio-security) Levies were voted in by 83% of the registered growers on 30th June 2011.  Subject to final approval by the Australian Government, the RD&E Levy is expected to commence on the 1st of January 2012 and will be applicable to the 2012 olive growing season.

All producers of olives grown in Australia for processing into olive oil and for table olives will be required to pay this levy. The levy will be collected at the point of point of processing and will be remitted to Levies Revenue Service (LRS) division of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) on an annual basis.

Having the RD&E Levy means that the Australian Industry will now have access to regular funding to undertake important and relevant RD&E work and bio-security measures on behalf of the entire Australian Olive Industry. Funds will be immediately available for expenditure in accordance with the Australian Olive Industry RD&E Plan 2010-2005.

There are three components to the $3.10/tonne Olive Levy:

1.   RD&E $3.00 per tonne of fruit over the weighbridge.

2.   EPPRD levy (Emergency Plan Pest Response Deed) set at $0 per tonne. This is often referred to as a "bio-security levy". The AOA is a member of Plant Health Australia (PHA) and is a signatory to the EPPRD.

3.   PHA subscription levy $0.10 per tonne.

Having a strong and capable industry structure is necessary to carry out the responsibilities of implementing the RD&E & Bio-security levy.
